Police or Extortionists: What's the difference?

“I had all the papers , there was no reason to stall me so he asked me to come over and asked Rs.1000 if i want my license back , to which i was astonished since there had been no fault of mine…..further he said give money or else we will prepare a false case ... to which i told i shall formally complaint against this bribe which you have sought.”

We’ve heard stories of traffic policemen demanding bribes in the name of fines for petty traffic violations. But stopping innocent individuals in cars or bikes for committing no violation whatsoever is simply audacious! Openly threatening to file false cases of abuse against unsuspecting citizens is a common practice followed by quite a lot of policemen. A testimony to this would be reports on our website that speak of the growing sense of high-handedness and abuse of power in the police force. A resident of Mumbai narrates his experience involving a rather uncouth policemen who confiscated the formers licence just because he refused to pay a bribe. In another case, a policemen hitchhikes on a bike that was brand new and didn’t have the licence plate. In both these cases, the respondents were in possession of every important document , yet attempts to fleece them were made. Such sorry state of affairs in an agency who is responsible to maintain law and order is beyond appalling. How many of us would disagree with that? (Pretty sure the traffic policemen reading this will be the first to disagree)
