Poll Analysis | Bribe Under the No-parking Board

Posted on September 28, 2012

Commuters continue to have a harrowing experience as the chaotic traffic condition in the country refuses to get any better. The roads remain blocked with vehicles especially in the peak hours of traffic in metropolitan areas.

The problem however is not with cars, buses, trucks, scooters or even bicycles but it is the general disregard for traffic rules. Vehicles parked at no-parking zones reflect a major traffic violation in the country. Reports on ipaibabribe.com show that motorists in all leading Indian cities pay a bribe to escape being fined for illegal parking. Surprisingly, Bangaloreans pay the maximum amount of bribe to avoid parking fines. A sum of Rs.378 is the average bribe amount paid by a Bangalorean to evade a parking ticket.

Bangalore is closely followed by Delhi that pays an average amount of Rs.350, Mumbai that pays Rs.320, Pune that pays Rs.277 and Hyderabad that pays Rs.250, while Chennai pays Rs.214.

I Paid a Bribe conducted a poll asking our readers, “Have you paid a bribe for parking in a no-parking zone?” A majority, which is 51 per cent of the respondents, have not faced such a situation, while 27 per cent of our readers unfortunately had to pay a bribe. Another 13 per cent of the voters know someone who paid a bribe for the same reason. The remaining 9 per cent were bribe fighters who resisted paying one.

Read this intriguing report where a person from Gwalior paid a bribe of Rs.250 to a police officer to avoid paying a penalty fee of Rs.450 for parking in a no-parking zone.

Another respondent from Chennai, recounting his experience mentioned an incident where a traffic inspector took Rs.100 from him but did not give a receipt in return.
