Custom officer asked for Rs 4000

Reported on June 8, 2011 from Navi Mumbai , Maharashtra  ι Report #7801

I migrated from US to India, My home goods shipment was there at Nhava Sheva Port. I talked with many clearing agents, they told me that they will have to pay bribe to get my shipment released, in there overall service charges they were including Rs 1000.00 for bribe, But I insited that I can not pay bribe. I did all clearing myself, when It came to customs, I drove myself to customs office in Nhava Sheva customs building to get customes clearance. There was a custom officer ( I forgot his name), he was so good in the starting, will get my work done etc etc, infact he did my thing custom cleared, but when I asked for the custome cleared papers, he asked for Rs.4000 with hidden warning in dumrage charges for my container (which would have started from next day). I told him I do not carry cash, at that moment he told me that my custom clearance papers are with his assistance, and he is gone for tea break. It was so unfortunate that I had to bribe him Rs 4000. Irony is that he did not accept the bribe himself, he had tout sitting right next to him, who took money from me. It was my first experience of India. I wish I would have gone to India at all.. country full of corrupt people..
