How to get an International Driving Permit in Karnataka

If you're in Karnataka, here is information on how-to get an international driving permit.

 

An International Driving Permit (IDP) allows an individual to drive a private motor vehicle in another country when accompanied by a valid license from their home country. The document is slightly larger than a standard passport and is essentially a multiple language translation of one's own existing driver's license, complete with photograph and vital statistics.

 

Process flow

  1. Fill in the application form CMV 4- A that is available at the enquiry counter or can be downloaded from the site.
  2. Submit the application form along with the required documents at the Regional Transport Office. It is important to ensure that the address in the driving licence should fall under the jurisdiction of the respective RTO.
  3. The candidate will then be required to appear in person.
  4. The applicant shall appear for a re-test if the Driving Licence is not issued within three months.

 

Documentation required:

  1. Application  Form CMV 4-A - available in the office/download from website.
  2. International driving permit Fee of Rs. 500/-
  3. Original valid driving licence + Passport + Visa + Air Ticket (Also one set of copies of the same)
  4. Medical certificate in form CMV 1 & CMV 1A should be enclosed along with the application.
  5. Three recent passport size photographs.

Do remember:

  1. Validity of the IDP will be for one year or till the validity of the driving licence whichever occurs first.
  2. In case of the driving licence belonging to other regions/state , the applicant should first apply for a change of address in the driving licence.
  3. For licences issued by other regions within Karnataka state, the time required for change of address is three days, and in case of a driving licence issued by other states,  the time required is 21 days.
