Official asked for bribe to refund excess income tax
Its an old story. Around Aug 2005, I received a call from somebody in Aaykar Bhavan in Hyderabad. He said there were some discrepancies in my IT returns and asked me to visit Aaykar Bhavan at Basheerbagh. I went there with necessary proofs. The officer explained where the discrepancies happened. I explained him this is how I calculated my dues. He said if I greased his hands, he could clear the refund cheque in one week and if were referred for further checks, I may have to pay upto 3 times my tax as a penalty. I told him that he was free to file any complaint against my returns and I will fight the case with whatever proof I have and left the place. I received my full refund cheque in one week and it was dated at least one month prior to the said incident, which means the cheque was all ready to be sent and this officer wanted to make some quick money.
