Reported on August 13, 2013 from Mau , Uttar Pradesh  ι Report #35423

I applied for my son's passport online, when my son turned 18, at Delhi. Filling form online was pretty nice and easy but fixing an appointment at PSK,s seemed herculean task as all slots would fill within no time. My son and I tried nearly for a week before we were advised by one of our acquaintances to get the appointment through an agent or dalal. But I was adamant not pay any bribe to anyone.

So, we kept on trying until my son finally got the appointment at Gurgaon PSK. All went fine at PSK as all our documents were in order.

Nearly after 10 days, a police constable visits our home in Delhi and asks for various documents as address proof and witnesses to sign his papers which we happily obliged to. But I was very firm not to oblige him by paying any money which probably he read in my eyes and did not ask. But the story does not end here.....

While applying online, I had filled in my native place address in permanent address column and my native place is a village somewhere in eastern UP under Haldharpur Police Station.

A week after successful verification at Delhi, we get a call from a CID policeman from our District, Mau, inquiring our whereabouts. I explain him our location and express our inability to be present for verification there and request him to visit my father there for completing the required formalities. The CID visits my father, completes required formalities, takes Rs 1000/- as dakshina and leaves. Just before leaving the brave CID advises my father to pay a visit to the local police station and pay same amount if he wanted his grandson to own a passport. Now my father calls me.

Hearing all, I call thit brave policeman ask him very politely but very firmly to return whatever he took from my father. To my surprise, he complies to my request, calls my father to a meeting point, returns Rs1000/- and also drops him home.

After this, I ask my father not pay any police for the verification, no matter how much they tried to. After few days local police station also visited my father and no police was paid any bribe as my son has no criminal background.

I was ready to face any eventuality and go any extent for not paying ant bribe to anyone for my son's first official document.

I just wanted to set an example before my son and did not want him to see me paying bribes to obtain his passport.

My son got his passport 24 days after appearing at PSK Gurgaon.
Even local postman was not paid single penny.
