We didn't pay...and it didn't pay!
My jewellery worth more than a lakh was stolen from our home in March 2003. No break-in was evident. The police dithered over the decision and did nothing. There was a general suggestion from some people who knew the system to pay up a bribe amounting to HALF the value lost to be able to recover what was stolen. My husband and I were certainly not going to do so. I felt that if I got back what I'd lost, I might feel inclined to 'gift' a nominal amount in gratitude to the police department - if it came to that, but never as a pre-requisite. The case is still open.
