You don't have to bribe if your documentation is perfect
I drove from Bangalore to Ahmedabad. Seeing my Karnataka license plate, traffic police stopped me. Asked for PUC certificate, DL and registration card. Couldn't find anything wrong - so they asked some money "just for the new year". I simply smiled and walked away.
