I applied for a new passport (file no. GU1069641203416) 3 months ago at the passport Seva Kendra in Guwahati. I have submitted all the correct documents necessary during the process. Yet it was 1 week ago I got a call from local police station for the verification. The time is way too long for such small issue though I didn't raise any issue considering the thorough verification process needed in the passport issuing process. Before visiting the station I heard a lot of grievances regarding bribery at that place. So finally, when it was our turn, the official over there asked for some money as gift for that work, but I refused to pay and walked out of the room. Next step was our verification at the Office of Superintendent of Police. So I went yesterday at the foreign department of S.P. office( in our city it is known for its enticement during passport verification process) and as the first step of their verification process they put our file on hold to recheck my birth certificate and they asked to come again some days later. On my way out of the office I heard the applicants talking about paying the official after the final step. They appeared as if it is the part of the process of issuing a passport and the worst part is that the general people seemed to have taken it for granted. They don’t even want to ask, for once, the reason for that payment.
So on my next visit to that I won’t be a paying a single dime in the name of corruption. And I am reporting this issue as an urge of a common citizen this country to stop corruption and help our country towards the development.
