The entire MVAT department in Mumbai is very famous for being very "honest". Very honest in the sense that no matter whom you pay the bribe to, it shall reach all the rungs in the proportion it should.
Similarly the registration process is also fairly standardised with most of the frequenters to the department knowing the "standard charges"! The same is to be paid even if the all documents are to the satisfaction.
However I had been to the department to obtain registration in May 2013 and when all the formalities were done, I offered the standard fee as is the norm. However, the officer (Mr. S. Wakade) refused much to my surprise! I thought the amount offended him so I offered to increase it. But he once again politely refused saying there is no question of taking it.
I was highly impressed by this! This incident and officer shall forever remain in my mind. I hope other take this an example and welcome people with open hands as they are there to pay tax to the government.
