I paid a bribe at the Housing Dept

Reported on March 18, 2011 from Bangalore , Karnataka  ι Report #25908

I paid a bribe. And I am fully aware of the shame involved in it. I am not only angered by the fact that someone blatantly asked me for a bribe, but I am agitated with the fact that I was taken advantage of.

I had to get the POA of a house that my father built transferred on to myself to expedite an education loan process in a local bank. And I was to leave to the US a month later for higher studies. The govt official, realizing my desperation to get this job done as soon as possible, insisted I pay the bribe. When I initially hesitated, he told me that by not paying the bribe would delay the process of transferring the POA would take 3 to 4 months (and suggested that my plans to study abroad would be jeopardized). And by paying it, it would be a 15 minute job. I felt taken advantage of, and I paid a bribe of Rs. 1,000 for a transaction for which the municipality charges Rs. 150. Irony is, the officer taking the bribe had a Lok Ayukta's sign on the wall which suggested that if someone asked for a bribe call the Lok Ayukta's number. However, the officer was smart (or stupid) enough to do a shoddy paint job on the sign, thinking people would not be able to read through and understand what is written.

What's your reaction?
