I received an arrear demand from IT Department for AY 2007-2008. The demand was for around Rs 28,000. Careful scrutiny of the old IT return revealed that the IT department was correct in making the demand. However, the tax paid by me was also correct. Due to a duplicate entry in the return (my mistake), the calculated tax was coming out to be more that what it actually should have been.
I approached the officer in Circle 23 at IT office at Bamboo Villa, Kolkata, with a request to rectify the records as I had all documents to prove it. First the officer said that it was not possible to rectify the records. Then he said that if I paid 50% of the arrear demand to him, he will take care of it.
I decided to pay the full arrear amount and clear the arrears. There is no point in paying an individual such a large sum of money to an official.
The department took its own sweet time to officially clear my dues, but that's another story. Had to file an RTI to get it done. :-)
