Didn't pay only because I mentioned my mother's name (title)
My father has always discouraged anyone who knows from paying bribes of any sort. After age 18, I decided to get my driver's license (several of my friends had either illegally obtained driver's license before they were legally eligible). I never knew obtaining a driver's license was so difficult, as the RTO officer asked me very confounding questions at my "verbal test". Luckily he was in a good mood when I protested that several of the questions he had asked were not in the driver's manual not could they be scientifically answered. (One question was - How fast should you drive when there are cows on the road).
When it came to the test, I did as well as I could (I tested for 2-wheeler and 4-wheeler on the same day). I cannot presume I did well enough to pass, but he arbitrarily told me to come another day after he did not find any cash in the file that I handed him. Angrily, I told him that my mother had taken half-day off to drive the car for my test and that she was a very senior government official in a local science institute. He told me he is not threatened calmly. Then I did unleash my furious mother at him. She asked to look at the file as to the places where I had failed, and he did not have any notes. She threatened to take it up with some Joint secretary (not sure if she was bluffing), and then he asked me to drive again and duly signed off on both my licenses. I'm not very proud that I had to use my mother's influence. In retrospect this is as bad as paying a bribe, so this incident might as well belong to "I paid a bribe" section.
