Insisted on paying the full fine

Reported on March 28, 2011 from New Delhi , Delhi  ι Report #32255

Was visiting Delhi from Punjab and was on my way out. Was just behind a car on the ring road. The light turned ********** when I had just crossed the stop line. It was the red light when I crossed the traffic junction. Police team stopped me. Young constable explained that the fine is Rs. 1500 and that it would have to be paid at the courts the next day so to save me the trouble would charge me Rs. 500 and let me go. I said, please take Rs. 1500, give me a receipt or else take my licence and I shall pay a fine at the court. He refused. Insisted on the receipt less transaction. Explained he was an honorable man and that this was not a bribe. After much talk of this kind: me insisting on paying the full fine and he insisting that he would not let me he finally said: OK, go this time but be careful next time.
