Never paid a bribe
The Mumbai International Airport Customs has the most rampant corruption in India, which by the way is not going to be solved by ********** Hazare. Where is Tehelka? Someone needs to neuter Mumbai Customs. Enforcement Directorate of the CBI along with Income Tax officers need to raid the Customs offices or Mumbai airport and the homes and bank accounts of all Customs officers at Mumbai Airport and their relatives too. I am an NRI, decided who first left India 15 years ago for graduate school. I have visited India 8 times, and my last visit was 6 years ago. Each time, I entered India through the Mumbai airport and encountered harassment by the Customs officers. Per the notice boards, cameras and audio recordings are not permitted. Customs officers exploit this. I have been asked for bribes, but I have argued that I had nothing with me. The very first time, I was returning to India after my studies, but I had a job offer to return abroad for apprenticeship. The Customs officer argued that I was not going back abroad and he wanted me to pay duty for all the items in the 2 bags I was carrying. I argued and showed him my job offer and my visa which was valid for another 5 years. He saw that I was well versed with the rules and he could not argue with me. He let me go. Each time after that, I only brought one suitcase to India, which contained only my basic necessities, and only as many items as allowed duty free per the Indian Customs website. I also kept a printout of the Customs rules. I never paid any duty. And sadly for India, I never brought anything valuable to India to leave in India. My family in India can buy whatever they want from India. I do send money to my family in India, by wire transfer. However, I avoid taking anything into India. I also decided not to visit India to avoid harassment. I am ashamed of being Indian thanks to Indian people throughout India who take and give bribes, and Indian Customs particularly at Mumbai *******
