Passport verification : 4 visits for a a free verification

Reported on October 21, 2011 from Bangalore , Karnataka  ι Report #31474

This is Mahalakshmi Layout Police station. Timing is about 2½ years ago. I had to go for a passport verification. I had asked for a renewal of my passport and being tatkal, I got my passport before the verification itself. I was called for a verification later.

The constable at the station never allowed me to see the officer for verification. Twice I had to wait out an hour, only to find the officer had to go out for lunch or something. The third time he openly asked me to "take care of him" to get the verification. I was very uncomfortable to give any money without a receipt, and I am always too bad at judging how much to give. I hate the guilt feeling of giving money illegally.

I sort of said I will come later and went away. The fourth time I went with my father, who works in a bank, and this time the constable for some reason didn't jump for money. We directly went to the officer and the job was done in a matter of 15 mintues.

Later the constable followed us to the parking lot and asked if "everything went fine" with a smile. We just said "yes" and moved on.

To be honest I was afraid that he would go and fiddle with my record for not paying him, but I do not live with a guilt of having paid a bribe.
