Reported on January 6, 2015 from Ahmedabad , Gujarat  ι Report #48501

I work as a Custom & Excise Consultant. I regularly submit applications for my clients involving large amounts to office of the Deputy Commissioner of Customs, Inland Container Deport (ICD) Khodiyar, Village Jamiyatpura, Dist. Gandhinagar, Gujarat for duty refund on imports. Every time they issue cheques, they demand bribe at the rate of 4% of the refund. It is a very well-oiled practice, sadly encouraged by claimants and their agents. So far I have courteously refused bribes. But the situation is now getting out of hand. My cases are being delayed and I have to face ire of my clients and have even lost some clients.

On 16-12-2014, the Inspector Mr. Jatin Shah dealing with my cases demanded bribe for two cheques totaling Rs. 2, 25,600. He handed over the cheques after much persuasion and entreaties. I fear that next time I will not be successful. I feel half-hearted to complain to Mr. Vaibhav Bajaj, Deputy Commissioner, an upright and helpful officer, as this will invite backlash from the inspector(s) and other lower rung officers handling my files.
