Refused to pay a bribe to expedite processing of PCC
I required a Police Clearance Certificate as necessary document for processing my work permit. After visiting the commissioner's office and the local police station multiple times, finally my application reached the local police station. When I went to ask him about the updates, first he asked me to produce some strange set of documents. After submitting the same in 3-4 days, he asked to bring another set of xerox's. When I again visited him with the new set of documents, and entered the room, he politely asked me to pay him whatever I want, and he will forward the application. I refused to do the same, asked him if I can talk to somebody to expedite my application. Of course, he refused. He took his own sweet time in forwarding my application back to the commissioner's office. There I simply went to the senior-most office in charge of the PCC process, and explained the need for expediting the application. I also mentioned to him the demand which the cop from my police station had put forward. On the negative side, he overlooked the demand, and didn't bother to ask me to file a complaint. On the positive side, he assured me that he will take care of my application on a priority basis as soon as it reaches him. I was surprised that he actually fulfilled his promise, and ensured that my application got through completely in a days time, instead of the usual 15+ days. Politely talking to the senior officer helped!!
