Refused to pay bribe for traffic violations

Reported on November 15, 2013 from Bangalore , Karnataka  ι Report #37279

Recently in Bangalore there was a rule passed banning all vehicles from having tinted windows. As I did not remove the tints from my car on time before the deadline expired, I was caught by the traffic police and told to pay a certain amount for the violation. I was ready to do so as I was at fault, however I requested for a receipt to ensure that the amount paid would not be pocketed by the police officer. He initially resisted and said that there was a problem with the machine that prints the receipts. But I stood my ground and refused to budge until I got the receipt, which would be proof of why I paid the money. Finally, he obliged and handed me a receipt stating the amount paid.

Though it was not a large sum of money, it is important that we as citizens realize the importance of our responsibilities when it comes to paying any money to government officials in the form of fines. Requesting for a receipt ensures that there is documented proof of the fine payment and that the money paid was not a bribe.
