The website of the central excise and customs is quite informative. http://www.cbec.gov.in/cae1-english.htm They have provided a list of all the chapters, the specific goods that come under the chapters and the duty on the respective goods. The duty for gold and electronic items is 10%.Tired international travelers are an easy target for such customs officials. If the next time you are travelling and are asked for a bribe, I think you must threaten the officials, take photographs and show them that you are conversant with the laws. Please download the information from the website of the Department and keep ready. Always ask officials under which law they are charging you. Also note down the details of the officials in case they threaten you, so that you can file a complaint against them. Be polite but firm, so that they do not threaten you or try to say that you were uncooperative. If you are firm about not paying a bribe and you know the rules, they cannot threaten you at all.

Hi Raghu, When coming from abroad, I purchased a Projector and Sony Ericsson Xpedia phone. The customs rule says that the duty will be charged 15 % on electronic gadgets if the product is new or old. Here the projector was New and phone used for 1 year. The customs officer said that the tax will be applied @35 % on the electronic goods which was untrue. And he repeatedly said the cost of projector is 75000 which was not correct, infact i bought it for 30000(£400). He said if you want to pay customs duty then pay then he would provide receipt for it, otherwise he said pay me Rs 10,000 without but will not provide any receipt. I told him that I don't have money and asked why should i pay? Bear in mind he was not only one they were a team of 3 to 4 other people in the team. I would like to take up this issue very seriously, as i feel that many individuals are getting harassed by the customs and immigration board across Indian cities. This is becoming a nuisance especially at Hyderabad International ******* 1) I would like to know, what is the maximum transaction limit if we can want to get Customs Duty WAIVED? 2) How much % of CUSTOM TAX applied for Electronic Gadgets?
