All babus are not the same
It was 4 pm on Saturday and I was waiting for my turn to collect my Certificate of Establishment from Karmika Bhavana on Bannerghatta road, after having completed all formalities the previous day. I was engrossed reading Bangalore Mirror ’s cover story of the day, How a govt employee earning Rs 18k salary is worth Rs 2.4 crore. I was determined to refuse in case any demand for bribe was made. I checked on the officer thrice and he asked me to wait for some more time. I started thinking that he must be expecting something from me. The right side of my brain was insisting that I should go with the flow and pay something instead of wasting time and energy. The other part was motivating me to fight for justice and say no to bribe. The watch showed 5.30 pm and I was preparing myself to reschedule my appointments on Monday afternoon to come again. To my surprise, the officer called me, handed over the certificate and left for the day. It took me some moments to realise that my job was done without any hassle, unlike what I had heard about and was expecting. This made me understand that there are still some officers who plead to differ.
