Honest customs official
I lived in the middle east for 27 years and I had no situation in the past where I had to pay a bribe anywhere.
I returned to India after retirement last year. I cleared my personal belongings at Chennai port during June 2010. Before I went to clear my goods everone said that you have to pay some bribe to reduce the duty. I was expecting that the duty could be near Rs. 50,000 as I had a large 52inchTV and some new furniture. When I met the officer first he said that they will assess the duty as per the value and I have to make a dd in favour of the customs. He also said to me that in case anyone in the department asks for any money I could report to him.
To cut the long story short I paid only Rs.9000+ by dd as duty and all my goods reached home in Coimbatore safe
