Airport Customs duty asked to pay Rs.3000 for importing TV
- Customs, Excise and Service Tax
- Customs Check and Clearance
- Paid INR 3,000
I brought a TV from Thailand and the actual amount I paid in Thai is Rs.38000, I need to pay the duty for only Rs.3000 (as 35000 is duty free). So the actual amount of customs duty is Rs.1000 ONLY (~35% of 3000)!
But bangalore customs evaluated the TV price as per the local india market value - I dont know where this is written in rule book. He looked up the book he had and said it's worth of Rs. 48000 and asked me to pay Rs.3000 as bribe instead of paying 4500 as tax.
I argued for about 10mins and explaining the actual amount I paid in Thai and nothing helped. Finally I decided to pay Rs. 4500 as import tax to goverment and left the airport.
Even after all the Anti-Corruption airport customs guys are really open in asking bribe! Shame on those guys!
