I went to the Police station located at Sector - 2 Vashi, Navi Mumbai...for the police verification....I was told by all that without paying the officer I wouldn't get the approval....when I reached there the officer handling the cases asked me to go and take xerox of a document...I though to myself that there's no reason for him to keep the xerox, however did no argue and went ahead and got the copy....
When I returned the crowd that was there when I had first spoken to him wasn't there....he asked me to sit down...I was with my neighbor who was speaking to him in Marathi....the officer gestured to my neighbor who gestured me to 'give' so I took a 100 rupee note and gave it to him....he said that the standard amount was 200....i reluctantly took out another 100 and gave it to him..
As I turned to leave I saw the other person who was there while I went to get the Xerox.....and then I realized that the officer sent applicants on useless errands, they all return at different times and so no-one is present when he takes the mandatory bribe...I was a little disappointed and felt helpless at the moment.because I really wanted to get my passport....I guess I buckled under the pressure.
