Car release

Reported on September 5, 2019 from Bangalore , Karnataka  ι Report #212988

A car was involved in a collision with another car, fortunately there was no damage to any persons. Both vehicles were taken to the nearest police station Kudur, Magadi. One had to be towed. The one who was hit from behind wanted to settle it out of court but the damage was great and it was best to settle using insurance. Our vehicle involved in hitting from behind was held back and had to be taken to a repair workshop. In order to release it the police said we need to arrest the driver (this is three days later when we come to take the car back), then release the person on bail, then the person needs to go to court and get a letter and then another note from the RTO office after which the vehicle can be removed. Finally a local person who knew the police station and its ways stood guarantee and gave a declaration on stamp paper that we would be available for any court hearing. An additional payment of Rs 7500 was made as easy money for releasing the vehicle. The policeman is a Shivakumar, of Kudur Police Station, Magadi district, off the Bangalore Mangalore highway.

The car that was hit also apparently had to pay a bribe to get his car released. What a way to make money. Just need to make some bad roads. The accident was due to some unmarked bumps causing trouble especially in the dark hours (before dawn in this case). The first car to stall and stop. The second car hit the first whose tail lights had gone off as the driver was attempting to start it.
