'A Driving Test'

Reported on March 12, 2011 from Mumbai , Maharashtra  ι Report #26605

I had applied for a Driving License in Mumbai. I had opted to learn driving at a Driving School. The people who ran the Driving School initially bribed the people at the RTO for getting a Learner's Licence because two days after I had apid the fee at the Driving School, they handed me a Learner Licence. The fee for the Driving School apparently consisted of the money for the bribe as well. I learnt driving for about three weeks. When the time came for the Driving Test at the RTO, I was called at the RTO early in the morning. After getting there, me and some of the other students from the Driving School, waited at the RTO. The guys running the Driving School came after half an hour. We then waited for our turn for the driving test. However, even after waiting there for more than 4 hours there wasn't a test. Suddenly around 3 in the afternoon, all of the people from the driving school were taken to another road near the RTO. We were told our Driving Test would be held there instead of the grounds where they are held normally. After an hour, an RTO Officer showed up, all the people were queued up. We had to enter a car, drive it a few paces and then get out. I was first in the queue. I had hardly gotten into the car, started it, and driven a few meters when the Officer said that it was enough. The people from the Driving School also hurriedly shouted for me to get out, and others to get in. I was asked to wait for others to finish. While I waited, I saw people get in drive a meter (in some cases even less) and get out. After everyone had finished the RTO Officer promptly disappeared. The Driving School guys collected 100 rupees from everyone to pay the Officer. The RTO Officer returned after a while to collect the sum. I got my licence in 2 to 3 weeks. No wonder we have so many accidents and casualties becuase of them.
