Time : 1.00 am. I was on my way back from Geoffery's (Old Airport Road), when I noticed a police road block ahead. I slowed down to a complete halt at the checkpoint. Three police officers were checking out cars for drunk driving. Oddly enough, they let people in expensive cars get past the barricade without even a test! I, on the other hand, was truly unlucky. I was driving a bog-standard Hyundai Eon. Definitely a lot cheaper than the Mercs and BMWs whooshing by me! The cop asks me to roll down my window. I comply and promptly ask,"Namaskara sir! Yen agide?" (excuse my rather atrocious Kannada). The cop takes out his breath analyzer and asks me to blow into it. I comply without a fuss. The meter beeps! A beep means that you're above the permissible limit of alcohol consumption. I look at him, wide-eyed and shocked! I haven't even had a drop to drink! I tell him, "Sir, nan kudlila!". He promptly tells me that I have! Obviously, I'm horribly mistaken since at the party I've somehow managed to get myself a drink without even realizing it! He tells me that he has to seize my car. I plead with him and then he says, " Sir, 2000 Rupees kodbide, ********** nim gadi sieze **********". I was shocked! But I went ahead and paid since I didn't want any trouble. I asked for a receipt and the officer shook his head and said, "no". I was flabbargasted!! I had just paid a bribe for no fault of mine!
