Fees to avoid hassles in someone rummaging through suitcases

I brought in three laptops from US - two old ones (personal and business) and a new one for my sister in India. I thought one new laptop was allowed free of custom charges. When custom officer asked me if I was carrying any laptops, I honestly answered his question. He said three was too many. My pleadings that I will take two laptops back with me did not work. His suggestion was to pay $100 and avoid all the hassles. When I refused, he gently suggested that the hassles in going through all of my suitcases probably was not worth my $100. My sister had been waiting outside for more than an hour and half and I just did not have enough energy to fight it out. I paid $50 in a corner and got out of there.
