Forced into paying bribe w/o braking any rule

Reported on November 4, 2010 from Agra , Uttar Pradesh  ι Report #30056

I was forced into paying bribe by a police inspector in agra w/o me braking any traffic rules.
It was the afternoon of 11-Sep, and I along with my wife were going to the ********** Mahal with some foreign delegates. The police inspector chased us on his bike and asked us to stop waving his hands. He claimed that we had broken a traffic light, but when I asked him to show me which traffic light (since we hadn't come across any in the last few KMs) he got loud and threatened that we would need to go to the Police station to clear the confusion. Knowing clearly that we were with foreign delegates, he demanded documents of the vehicle, all of which were produced. However, he still demanded that we pay Rs 1200/- and refused to issue a challan for it. He looked rowdy and knowing the bad reputation of UP, we decided to pay him whatever would make him go away, because he had us waiting for over 20 mins on the road.
The inspector finally agreed for Rs 400/-, and claimed that this money goes to all the senior officials as well. I tried to get his name, however his name tag was hidden. Only managed to get his bike no.
I guess its not worth persuing this case anymore since its been a while, but I would always think twice before visiting the ********** Mahal with foreign guests again. Agra will surely loose out on tourist revenue.
