I had to pay bribe for traffic violation I did not commit

Reported on August 18, 2011 from Nagaur , Rajasthan  ι Report #4759

I was waiting on a signal for it to turn green. As soon as it turned green I crossed the road. But when I reached the other side the traffic cop stopped me and said I started before the signal turned green! Seriously I was like what the hell! Other people were crossing along with me but he still dared to say that to me. I tried to argue but what could I do? The cops can stop people at will and accuse them without any proof. He took my license and insurance papers and asked me to sign on a form. He wrote something on it in a way that it was impossible to read. Then he said that I will have to collect the papers from a nearby office after paying Rs. 500. It was clear to me by now that he wanted money and was doing all this just for that. So I asked him not to send my papers to the office. He told me to pay the money there itself if I dont want the papers to be sent. I told him I dont have that much money. So after some negotiations I paid him Rs. 100 and he asked me to sign on the back of the same papers and gave me my license back.
