I had to pay for their inefficiency

Reported on June 21, 2011 from Cochin , Kerala  ι Report #7030

Hi all

I was a student then and wanted a passport at the earliest as I needed to go abroad for my studies. My dad is a central government employee and I have seen him as a honest person. Now as a government employee he gets transferred all the time and henceforth my residential address used to change quite frequently. On police verification the police man is doubtful of me who has never done anything even close being criminal of being involved in criminal activities. He told he will put a bad report if I didnt pay up. I refused jeopardizing my chances to go abroad. This game went on for quite some time. My parents were losing their patience as they didnt want me to lose the opportunity to study and to lose my scholarship. I was admonished for being adamant. The police once called me over to the station, then the came to my college and all checks. But to their dismay they had no complaints against me. I wrote letters to the reginal passport office as regarding their inefficiency.

One fine day, the police man came again for a check. I still stuck to what I was doing. But my friend concerned about my well being took her money out and paid the cop.

It would have been all good if this story ended here. But it didnt. He had not objected to my police report but he never sent it to the passport office.

And then my dad did the rest. As a high ranking government employee, he got me the passport in one week.

I still refuse to pay bribes and now I live in one of the least corrupt countries in the world.
