I paid bribe for Passport application enquiry

Reported on August 19, 2011 from Malerkotla , Punjab  ι Report #4519

Hi all. My story goes back to 2007, when I just had graduated from GNDU with a masters degree and was preparing for the GRE exam. I needed my passport to take the GRE exam. I applied for the passport and waited for the enquiry. A policeman came to my house one day and told me about the enquiry. He told me to visit police station later in the evening with my passport size photos. I went to see him the same evening. He asked me about my profession (I was teaching as a ad hoc lecturer at that time with my salary amouting to 12000 per month), and asked me for 1000 because I was a lecturer. I told him that I had only 200 Rs in pocket and could not pay 1000 (I had not received my first salary until then). He asked me about my birth place which happens to be Kapurthala (25 kms from Beas). He said he will clear my file. So I went back home with the trust that all went well. But even after 6 weeks I did not hear back from passport office and when I enquired my file had not reached back at passport office (Jalandhar city). I went to the SP office in Amritsar and found that they had my file and had not forwarded my file for no reason (as far as I can remember the police officer from Beas had written a comment regarding my birth place whic should not have made any difference). So on pleading and multiple visits they sent my file to passport office Jalandhar but with the comments that my birth place needed to confirmed from Kapurthala police station. They sent my file to Kapurthala and also another fresh enquiry to Beas police station. I paid Rs 200 to Kapurthala police officer and Rs 400 to the same police man at BEas station for fresh enquiry. And surprisingly everything went well. I recieved my passport in 2 months. So Rs 600 was all that made difference between the two enquiries.
