Imported Chocolates on India Arrival

Reported on March 12, 2011 from Mumbai , Maharashtra  ι Report #26630

While exiting the customs area I was stopped by a Havaldar, who checked my passport. He noticed that I was a student returning home for the first time.

He asked me what have I bought from Australia for him. I said I din't know you so far, so haven't bought anything this time. But I will keep it in my mind and definitely bring something for you next time. He still insisted that "Abhi aap kuch nahi laye ho hamare liye toh hum aapko aage badne kaise de sakte hain? Chalo bag kholo, kuch na kuch toh laye honge na bahar se aa rahe ho toh". He opened my suitcases and picked up one huge pack of assorted chocolates. And when I was about to close the bag, he said, "mereko akele ko gift dega toh bada sahab ko gussa ayaega aur faltu mein kit kit karega". And so he picked up another two packets of chocolates all amounting to an approximate value of 40 AUD (~1720 INR).

Although this is not a very big amount for someone coming from abroad but I am not sure what kind of a image it leaves on foriegners who would be targetted the same way.
