We run a couple of business in garments and are regularly harassed. We pride ourselves in being an honest business but the ITO has frozen our accounts because he said there are no honest businesses in india and that our books are lying. Apparently the governments collection drive is pushing these civil servants into extortion. Our accounts are frozen despite them not being able prove any wrong doing.
A clerk at the IT office made an incorrect entry in our books to which we appealed there and then - but of course the appeal is put at the bottom of the pile. They made an exorbitant claim which we cannot afford and they have high handedly closed our accounts.
We also suspect that they have singled us out because they marched into one of our stores one day with their family and we did not oblige them with free products - in this case a sari.
Upon consultation with our CA we are advised that there are several businesses to whom this is happening. How does one survive? must we be dishonest?
