Its rather a practice

Reported on April 22, 2011 from Kolkata , West Bengal  ι Report #9060

Hi,
Its a fact that while obtaining a passport, we have to undergo police verification. What I found that is here in IIT kharagpur, almost all students apply for passport-some go through the broker and some in person.Broker gets his 'commission' which cannot be called bribe. When police comes for verification, each student gives him 200.He says,"hum sirf 200 hi lethe hi jyada nahi".I thought its kind of fee but later found that since he is not giving any receipt, its bribe.Just imagine if 500 students(believe me the number is quite more than that) pay 200 each, he is getting 100,000 as bribe every year. Its rather a practice here to pay him 200 without saying anything as we(those who did in person) have our own fear that passport may be forfeited because of this reason."200 dedo aur jo bhi flaws hi rectify ho jayega.agar flaws nahi tho, tab passport forfeit nahi hoge" this is the belief here.
How can something be done here? I've paid him as I was able to pay and passport is one thing where 'poor' students never try so,no one would question that 200.
