NRIs are expected to pay higher bribes

Reported on March 8, 2012 from New Delhi , Delhi  ι Report #2677

My father died and I was keen to ensure that my mother was not hassled in getting the death certificate. I live overseas but I'm an Indian citizen. The clerk told me it would take 4 to 6 weeks. I told him that I could not wait that long and that my mother was too old to come to the MCD office. He told me that it was because the computer had broken down and they were hundreds of cases already pending. I pleaded to him for help and he said that he could arrange to get it done in a week if I paid him Rs.200. I told them I had to go back to work abroad. He asked me whether I was an NRI. I said I wasn't sure but I did work abroad. He now raised that amount to Rs.500. I said I wanted it the next day. He now raised it to Rs.1000. I said I could not afford it and would ask a relative to pick it up in a week. He said if I paid him Rs.500 just now (not later when picking up the document), he would have it ready by the next day. I paid him, and collected the Death Certificate the next day.
