Over-speeding or Signal Cross while driving a 2-wheeler

Reported on March 3, 2011 from Bangalore , Karnataka  ι Report #28098

I once happened to be crossing Infantry road signal when the light had just turned to red and many fellow bikers too crossed as for opposite side it wasn't green light yet (I agree we all were offenders). Suddenly 2 constables jumped onto the road from nowhere (I am sure they were hiding). :) This is a tactics applied by Bangalore traffic cops. They usually hide behind the tree or electricity poles near the crossings (signals) in order to make pple think there is nobody watching so that they will break a rule. And then they appear like Yumdoots to catch the culprits!! This is easy money to them as everybody is in a hurry and the state of traffic in b'lore city is pathetic so everybody tends to cross and if one does more follow. I agree breaking a law is not good but I wonder why can't the traffic police stay in sight so that pple don't break law. They make them break it and then catch and get money.

In this case I was unlucky as i was the behind everybody they all sped up but i stopped. I negotiated from 300/- to 50/- Rs. I guess my previous experiences helped! ;-). I also want to say that I am not a regular breaker of traffic rules and I respect law. But due to lack of local route knowledge we make mistakes (so many 1 ways, no clearly marked free left, no right turns, no u-turns ..GOd!! and long traffic jams).

So in b'lore any traffic penalty starts with 300/- and can be negotiated to 100 or 50 bucks.
