Paid bribe for passport verification

The policemen who conducted police verification for my passport renewal asked me for money. They said I should be paying them something because they had helped me write the application in English since I didn't know Kannada. I paid them Rs 400. The policemen were nice and polite but I would have preferred paying them nothing.
