Paid Bribe to Shivpal Singh Bhadauriya

Reported on February 3, 2015 from Gwalior , Madhya Pradesh  ι Report #51045

I paid Rs. 300 to one Mr. Shivpal Singh Bhadauriya of the Hazira Thana at Gwalior (Madhya Pradesh). The incident was shocking for me and my friends who accompanied me to the police station for address verification.

First of all, Mr. SSB did not come to verify whether I stay at my address or not. He simply called me up and asked me to appear at the police station with those two people who could vouch for me.
When I went there, initially he acted very calm. I submitted each and every document correctly. He turned the papers back and forth over and over again and when he couldn't find a mistake (which he could later present as an excuse for taking bribe) he went to his senior officer (the Thana In-charge - Mr. J.P. Bhatt) who told me that the two photographs I had submitted did not look similar and I should go and come back with two 'exactly same' photographs after two days.
Mr. SSB looked at me thinking I would give him some money and let the photographs be. Instead, I got him freshly printed copies of my passport size photo (so that they looked 'exactly same') within half an hour.
Poor Mr. SSB could not find a single issue with my passport application so in the end, frustrated, he said it out bluntly -

"Ab kharcha de do"
(Give me some bribe)

I asked him, "How much?" to which he said -

"500 se kam me aajkal kya hota hai?"
(Is there an amount less significant than Rs. 500 these days?)

I told him I had only Rs. 300. He accepted it gladly and said -

"Congratulations!"
