I am a respected doctor who rents a place in sec 22B- a prime sector -in Chandigarh. The greedy NRI building owners wanted to recover rent amounting to lakhs over many years, based on the lease deed, even though they had been accepting Rs 30,000 rent happily over the years.
Unfortunately, our courts have started favoring owners over tenants as there is a big push at both the centre and state level to generate more tax revenue to fund schemes for the poor.
As my rent arrears were over 10 lakhs, I could not take a chance and paid the rent controller -call him Mr ******* -Rs 1 lakh to ensure the decision goes my way. He did as directed but left too much room for a strong appeal. Even bribes don't guarantee honesty these days. - Dr C.
