Parking in No-Parking Zone

Reported on March 29, 2011 from Pune , Maharashtra  ι Report #25189

I lived in Pune between 2002-2007. Towing of vehicles, especially two-wheelers, was a familiar sight all over Pune. Trucks with sturdy men at the back, eyeing for possible victims, better describes the familiar sight. I didnt realise that every victim is a law breaking irresponsible citizen till my vehicle got towed away. I had made a point to park within parking zone. I came out to only find a police guy with these men waiting for me. My vehicle was in the border line. I was shocked to see that it had been pushed so far out of the line. I tried explaining it to the police guy. But his reactions only made me realise that they were behind this set-up. I was just plain frustrated. Rs. 100 for a student is a big deal and I had to part with that and no more. So, I fell for the usual seductive trap of 'if you want a receipt, it will cost you more.' In pune, towing is a very lucrative business for the traffic police. People are not so complacent to part with their money when they know this happens. But the police seems to have hatched a perfect plan to set such traps for people!
