Pay for collecting missed parcel

Reported on April 11, 2012 from Mumbai , Maharashtra  ι Report #1961

Since both me and my husband work, we often miss couriers/ parcels at home. Most courier companies are friendly and they deliver at an alternate day/ time when it is convenient to us. Yesterday for the first time we missed a parcel from the bank that was being delivered by the Post office. Since the parcel was in my husband's name, but he was out of town I decided to collect the parcel.
On reaching the PO, the babu tells me that the time for collecting missed parcels is over (though he did not express any intention of not giving my parcel). I told him if possible to give the parcel since my husband is out of town and the parcel may return by the time he comes back. He asked me how I was related to him, and incase I was carrying any identification proof. When I told him that I was not carrying any proof, he kept repeating how can we handover the confidential documents of someone without any proof...(Still no sign that he is not going to give me that parcel). I kept quiet since the parcel going back would mean a lot of trouble. He finally gives the cheque book to me and says I should give his nashta-paani since he is giving it to me without any proof. I am amazed at the whole dialogue and ask again what he wants. He says only if I give him 'chai-paani' can he give the parcel.

I had no option but to give him Rs. 50 (for my own document), in order to save trouble and my weekend. Yes I did pay a bribe; and am not happy about it! :(
