As I needed a medical fitness certificate which must only indicate that I am free from any kind of infectious diseases I went to the Bowring & Lady Curzon Hospital in Banglore where I met a duty doctor and explained my need. He asked me to do a couple of blood and other tests which were necessary for him to make the certificate and he also told me that I should get it done at one particular diagnostic lab. After following his directions and obtaining the result,he said that in order to give me the certificate I have to pay him a sum of Rs.3000/-. So I asked him what it was for and he brought in another guy and said, "See this person.He has come for the same purpose as yours.If he is willing to pay,why can't you?" At the same time,the other guy nodded in agreement and suggested that I pay the amount to the doctor.As I felt a bit uneasy I just tried to escape saying I didnt have that much money in hand,where in the doctor immediately said,"give me whatever you have now.The remaining you can bring when you come to collect the certificate." I felt ashamed,disgusted,frustrated and angry all at the same time. Through out our lives we were taught that the medical profession is the noblest of all.And I honestly felt sad and decided not to go back to him.I never paid him the bribe and never went back to him. Fortunately I found another hospital and another doctor who gave me the certificate through the proper channel.Let's not encourage such money minded swindlers who call themselves doctors.
