I wished to give a general power of attorney to my father. So, I went inside the registrar office with the typed matter to do it myself along with my father. I found that I was purposely made to wait and I felt ridiculous, when people who came after me and people who dont follow the queue at all, get their work done. I went outside the registrar office and had a cup of tea in the ********** tea stall outside the registrar office. I noticed that there are some documenting people who are stationed outside the registrar office and especially some of them with big offices. I went inside one of them and told them I wished to get a power of attorney to my father. With no delay I got the response "1500 rupees sir". I was shocked, by the quickness of response !. It has been sometime since I did go to sub registrar office and I felt things have change dramatically in a few years time. I then rushed to ATM got 1500 rupees and paid the document writer the fee. He asked me to wait in the office. I waited and the document was entered in their books, since the assistant of the sub-registrar wanted to go for tea, even before I was taken inside their office. This time, with lots of RESPECT, I was taken inside and with red carpet service I got my work done. The actual government fees for this work is Rs. 150. However, Rs. 1350 is for the cost of the red carpet. I paid 10 times more the government cost, to get something done as simple as a general power of attorney. Think if I have registrar a property worth a few crores. How much would the registrar and sub-registrar need?
I am ashamed to say I paid bribe to get something done. Fact of the matter is, in India today, you can be ashamed and even die but you cannot get a proper burial, if you don't pay the bribe. And more importantly, right now, we dont pay bribe to break the rule, but we are actually paying bribe to make someone do their job.
Where is India headed to ???????
