Traffic police demanded Rs.600 for not showing PUC certificate

Reported on April 11, 2015 from Navi Mumbai , Maharashtra  ι Report #58439

Traffic police stopped me on palm beach road, Navi Mumbai near NRI Estate for faulty Number Plate. He demanded papers of my vehicle I promptly showed him 3 documents:
1.Registration certificate
2. Licence
3. Insurance.
As per Motor vehicle Act of Maharashtra state it is sufficient to show above 3 documents. However he asked mt show PUC certificate as well which i could not find it though i remember i had done PUC of my vehicle. So the traffic police gave me two options:
1. He took my driving licence and asked me to collect at sector 48 Nerul police station by paying a fine of Rs.1200. For which he will give me challan
2. Pay bribe of Rs.600 and get instant relief from going to police station and also save Rs.600
As i was in a hurry and wanted top save Rs.600 i gave him Rs.400 after lot of bargaining.
After coming home is did some research on traffic offences and found the following:
1. No need to show/produce PUC certificate until Traffic police has a genuine reason to ask for it. Normally he would ask for PUC if the vehicle is noisy or it is really polluting
2 Fine for not having PUC is Rs.500
3.Fine for faulty number plate is Rs.100
4. In case Traffic police keeps the licence then it can collected from Police station which should be clearly instructed by the Traffic police. It would be well preserved with them until it is collected from them.
Next time i am sure i will pay fine and take challan (even i am in hurry) if i violate any rule.
