It was during the late hours of the afternoon as I took a left onto Karve Road past the Dashabujha Ganpati Mandir. Now, mind you, I did not know that one was not allowed to turn left as there was no sign. Also, others also turned left and I went with the flow. However, I was the unlucky "bakra" as a traffic policeman whistled at either me or the vehicle in front. The other guy ran, I stopped. Immediately, he started harassing me about breaking traffic rules. When I pointed out that there were fifteen others who had done the same thing, he got a little belligerent. He started swearing and demanded that I pay 5000 Rs/- as compensation for all of those other drivers. First, I thought he was joking but the guy was actually serious. I challenged by saying that he could give me his badge number and a receipt and I could take it at up at the police station from where he was posted. After this, he started backing down after my repeated veiled threats that I would expose this and was not going to back down. However, the cop still demanded some amount of compensation, that too illegally, as he was refusing to tear a receipt. At this point, I was already very late for an appointment and I conceded to his now much-bargained demand of Rs. 500 and paid in disgust. I vowed that I would complain about this guy as I had his badge number. I wrote a letter that night and posted it the next day. Now, 6 months after still no reply.
