For whom the bribe tolls

Reported on April 7, 2011 from Indore , Madhya Pradesh  ι Report #9822

My wife and I (who live and work in Qatar) were on a holiday in MP with Indore as the base. On our return, we were stoppped at a point (between Indore and another district? Not sure) where there were some policemen with a sergeant in charge. It was a routine checkpoint; several vehicles were waiting. We sent the driver with all the papers of the car. The papers were all in order despite which the policemen asked for 500 rs. Their argument was that the sergeant or senior officer was in his car at some distance. He had to leave soon and they had to given him some sweets or bananas or something and where was the money going to come from? He asked the quetion as though he had a right to a bribe! I did not want to stetch the scene as it was in the middle of the day and my aged relatives were waiting in the heat to be on our way home once again. The driver felt that '100 rs mein maan jayenge' and he settled it with that amount. This is not the only time I paid a bribe in India but the most recent. I am aware of Tranparency International and how India has not been doing well in the corruption 'rankings'. I guess, through incidents such as this one, we are all responsible!
