A Driving License is an official document which states that a person may operate a motorized vehicle, such as a motorcycle, car, truck or a bus, on a public roadway. A person is not entitled to drive in the absence of his or her Driving License.

1. Who can get a Driving License?

The first thing you need to know about getting a license is the age at which you can receive it. You can get it after:

  • Completion of 16 years of age, for driving motor cycles with engine capacity not exceeding 50cc with the consent of the parent / guardian.
  • Completion of 18 years of age, motor cycles with engine capacity exceeding 50cc and light motor vehicles.
  • Completion of 20 years of age, for an endorsement to drive transport vehicles.

You can apply for your Driving License as well as Learners License at the nearest RTO

Getting a Driving License involves two stages:

You first have to get an application Form 2 to apply. This can either be obtained by clicking on the following link or obtaining the form from the RTO enquiry counter:

Documents Required
i) 3 recent passport size photographs
ii) Address Proof (Ration Card, Passport, Voter ID, Electricity Bill)
iii) Age Proof (Education Certificate with Date of Birth, Birth Certificate, PAN card)

Fees details:

Rs.30 to be paid only at RTO cash counter.

Where to submit:
Application along with required documents shall be submitted at the R.T.O office.

Preliminary Test:
After submitting the application along with required documents, written test with multiple choice questions on rules and signs will be conducted by Inspector of Motor Vehicles. You have to obtain at least 12 marks out of 20. You can click on the following link to obtain information about traffic signals:

Collect Learner’s License
Applicants who have passed can collect their learner’s license (LL) between 4.30 – 5.30 pm on the same day.  Failed candidates can re-appear for test from the next day onwards.

Validity of Learner’s License: 6 months (throughout India).

 

 

b)      Obtaining a Permanent License:

Eligibility: Any applicant who completed 30days from the date of issue of learner’s license.

How to Apply:
To apply for a Driving License you can do either of the following:

- Go to the RTO enquiry counter and collect the form

Documents Required

  • Learner’s License
  • 3 recent passport size photographs
  • Documents of vehicle

Fees details:

  • Rs. 215 for PVC/Smart Card (CMV Form 7)
  • Rs. 50 for Driving Test (Test of Competence to drive)

Submission:
You need to submit Form-4 along with Learner’s License, Documents of vehicle and 3 photographs at R.T.O office.

Driving test:
An Inspector of motor vehicles conducts the driving test as per the rule 15 of Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989.

RTO Department will take digital photo of the applicants who have passed.

Collect Permanent License (Driving License):
Applicants who have passed can collect their Driving license (LL) between 4.30 – 5.30 pm after couple of days.  Failed candidates can re-appear for test after 7 days by paying the test fees of Rs. 50.

Validity of Permanent License (Driving License): 20 years (throughout India).

5. What is the fee charged for getting a Driving License?

Learners License- Rs. 30

6. What do I do if I fail the Driving Test?

Failed candidates can re-appear for test after 7 days by paying the test fees of Rs. 50.
