Bangalore Airport Customs - Mr. Srihari and His Senior Official

Reported on June 8, 2013 from Bangalore , Karnataka  ι Report #34645

I entered Bangalore form Singapore yesterday night. I have some questions about the customs duty.
Case: I brought a TV LG 42LA6120 from Singapore worth S$799 and had a GST return of S$37. I have valid invoice and GST returns invoice for the same.

1. What will be the amount on which the tax will be calculated? Is it S$799 or is it S$762.

2. If the price is $762, then the total cost of the TV is Rs. 34290/- and below my tax limit (SGD is Rs. 45 for yesterday’s rate).

3. If the price that is considered is $799, then the cost of the TV is Rs. 35955/- which means I have to pay tax for only Rs. 955/-

I came across the custom official Mr. Srihari (I noted his name) and his senior official (not sure about his name) who calculated the price of the TV in India instead of the actual price that I had paid in spite of I having all the valid invoices.

Finally, I was let over after being asked to pay Rs. 739/- after around 2 hours.

Sir, it is not about the Rs. 739/- that I have paid, it is how ashamed I was when I JUST stepped into my country. Moreover, I saw he (and his senior official) taking bribes from almost everyone; just everyone. What a bad feeling I had just when I stepped into my country. And moreover, when I paid Rs. 800/- the officer refused to pay me the change back, when I asked, he says rudely “why don’t you get the change; you can get a TV, but not the change”.
I haven’t had this kind of treatment in any country that I entered; what an embarrassing situation it is, when you are being treated like this. This has to change!

Incredible India!
