Bribe in the name of moral policing

Reported on June 28, 2013 from Navi Mumbai , Maharashtra  ι Report #34776

Dear Sir,

Although this incident took place a year back, I have not been able to get over it. I was returning from office late at night and as per our company policy a male colleague has to drop us back home after a particular time. In this case it was my manager on the project. We had a particularly bad day at work and when we reached Vashi we decided to stop at Mini Seashore (Sec 9) for a quick chat. It must have hardly been 10 mins that suddenly police vans came and dragged us out of the place. The Police inspector started yelling at us and abusing us. I showed him my company id and told him that I was an educated professional. He manhandled my manager and then the female constable dragged me to the van. They took us to the police station and said it was a crime to visit the place after certain time! They also indicated that I may be a call girl/ prostitute inspite of showing them my company identification. After an hour long harassment session they decided to let us go only if we paid them Rs.10000. My manager was very upset with all this. they allowed him to go to the ATM to withdraw the amount and then left us at 5 am in the morning. I would also like to mention upfront - We were not involved in any activity that would require "moral policing". This incident has stayed with me for long. I want to know if there is any solution to this. I have never felt so helpless and humiliated. If visiting the public place after a certain time was a crime, I am ready to pay for the fine. But I doubt it would be Rs.10000. Also I believe the police do not have any rights to defame or humiliate a person by calling them call girls / Prostitutes.

What's your reaction?
